A used EV can make a lot of sense when petrol prices, servicing bills and the daily commute are all part of the equation. But used electric cars should be assessed differently from petrol or diesel vehicles. The odometer still matters, yet battery condition, charging access and real-world range can have a bigger effect on whether a particular car suits your life.
The good news is that the checks are practical. Start with the model, ask clear questions of the seller, inspect the vehicle properly and compare the total cost, not just the advertised price. A well-kept used EV can be an efficient, enjoyable car to own. The right choice depends on where you drive, where you park and how easily you can charge.
Start with your driving and charging routine
Before comparing makes and models, look at your usual week. A driver travelling 30 kilometres a day with off-street parking has very different needs from someone covering long regional distances or relying on street parking in an apartment precinct.
Home charging is the biggest convenience factor for many EV owners. A standard household power point can add useful range slowly, while a dedicated wall charger can replenish the battery much faster. If you rent, live in a strata building or park on the street, confirm what charging is realistically available before committing. Public chargers can work well, but access, pricing and reliability vary by location and network.
Also consider longer trips. Check the charging stops on routes you actually use, including the distance between them and whether the vehicle can charge at compatible fast-charging stations. A car that is ideal for weekday driving may require more planning for regular trips between Sydney and Canberra, Melbourne and regional Victoria, or Perth and holiday destinations further afield.
Compare used electric cars by usable range
The range quoted when a vehicle was new is a starting point, not a promise. Highway speeds, hills, cold weather, air conditioning, passenger load and driving style all affect energy use. Older EVs may also have less available range than when new because all lithium-ion batteries gradually lose capacity.
Rather than focusing only on the biggest official range figure, ask whether the car can comfortably cover your normal driving with a buffer. If your longest typical day is 180 kilometres, a vehicle that realistically manages 250 kilometres may be a better fit than a cheaper option that leaves little room for detours, traffic or a missed charging stop.
Some earlier EVs were designed mainly for city use and have modest battery capacity. They can be excellent value for commuters or second-car households, but less suitable for frequent country driving. Newer models generally offer longer range and faster charging, though they may cost more on the used market.
Battery health is the key condition check
A battery does not need to be replaced simply because a vehicle is several years old. Most EV batteries are designed to retain a substantial amount of their original capacity over a long service life. Still, battery health deserves more attention than a quick look at the dashboard range estimate.
Ask the seller whether a battery health report is available and whether the vehicle has had any battery-related repairs. Some cars can provide a state-of-health reading through the vehicle system or a specialist diagnostic assessment. A report that shows remaining capacity, fault codes and charging history can provide useful context, particularly on an older or higher-kilometre vehicle.
Check the original battery warranty and its remaining time or kilometre coverage. Many manufacturers offered battery warranties of around eight years, often with a minimum capacity condition, but the exact terms differ by make, model and build year. Confirm whether the warranty transfers to a new owner and whether servicing requirements apply.
Avoid assuming a low odometer reading automatically means a healthier battery. EV batteries age with time as well as use. Conversely, a regularly driven car with good charging habits and complete servicing may be a stronger prospect than a lightly used example that has sat unused for long periods.
Inspect the vehicle beyond the battery
An EV still has tyres, brakes, suspension, air conditioning, steering, bodywork and a 12-volt battery. These items can affect safety, comfort and the cost of ownership just as they would in any other used car.
During an inspection, look for uneven tyre wear, damage underneath the car and signs of poor-quality repair work. EVs can be heavy due to their battery packs, so tyres may wear differently depending on the model and how it has been driven. Check that the charge port flap, cable connections and locking mechanism work properly, and inspect the charging cable supplied with the vehicle.
Take a proper test drive. Notice how smoothly the car accelerates, whether regenerative braking feels consistent and whether any warning lights appear. Listen for suspension knocks and tyre noise, especially on rougher roads. Test the air conditioning, touchscreen, reversing camera, central locking and driver-assistance features. Repairs to screens, sensors and cameras can be expensive, and some functions may need calibration after accident repairs.
A pre-purchase inspection by a technician familiar with EVs is worthwhile for a higher-value purchase. They can check the underbody and battery enclosure for impact damage, review fault codes and identify issues that are not obvious on a short drive.
Check history, charging equipment and software
A clear vehicle history is part of a confident purchase. Verify the VIN against the car, registration documents and service records. A PPSR history report can help identify whether the vehicle has recorded finance owing, has been written off or has been reported stolen. This is especially important in a private sale, where the buyer is responsible for completing their own checks.
Ask for service invoices, recall documentation and records of any warranty work. EVs require less routine mechanical servicing than combustion vehicles, but scheduled checks still matter. Records can show whether brake fluid, cabin filters, tyres and cooling systems have been maintained as required.
Confirm what comes with the car: both keys, portable charging cable, wall-charger access card if applicable, adapters and any locking wheel-nut key. Replacing missing equipment can add unexpected cost.
Software is another consideration. Many EVs receive over-the-air updates that improve features, charging behaviour or battery management. Ask whether all updates are current and whether paid connected services transfer to the next owner. Do not rely on a seller’s app access alone - make sure accounts can be removed and the vehicle can be registered to you after settlement.
Price the whole ownership picture
A lower purchase price is appealing, but compare more than the sticker price. Consider insurance, tyres, registration, servicing, home charging installation and expected public-charging use. Electricity costs depend on your energy plan, charging time and local public charger rates, so two owners of the same car may have very different running costs.
Government incentives, stamp duty arrangements and registration concessions have changed over time and vary across Australian states and territories. Check the current rules that apply where you live rather than building your budget around an older headline offer.
Finance can also change the decision. Compare the interest rate, loan term, fees and total amount repayable, not only the weekly figure. A longer term may lower the repayment but increase the overall cost. Buy through a clear, documented process
Whether you buy from a dealer or a private seller, keep the process transparent. Review the listing specifications carefully, ask questions before travelling, inspect in daylight and retain written records of what has been agreed. If a seller makes a claim about range, battery health, included charging equipment or remaining warranty, ask for supporting documents.
Dealer vehicles may come with consumer protections that differ from a private sale, while private sales can offer more room to negotiate. Neither route removes the need for checks.
